Singapore Inflation Calculator
Singapore’s inflation has swung sharply over the past 25 years — from mild deflation in 2015–2016 to over 6% in both 2008 and 2022. This tool has two modes: a historical calculator built from Singapore’s actual year-by-year inflation data (2000–2024) to show what a past amount of money is worth in today’s dollars, and a future-projection calculator that estimates what today’s money will be worth years from now at an inflation rate you choose.
How the Historical Calculator Works
This tool builds a price index from Singapore’s published year-by-year inflation rate, working backward from 2024 (set to 100) using each year’s actual percentage change, the same underlying method used by an official Consumer Price Index. To convert an amount from one year to another, it multiplies your amount by the ratio of the two years’ index values — grounded in real annual inflation data rather than a flat assumed rate.
Why Singapore’s Inflation Swings So Much
As a small, trade-dependent, import-reliant economy, Singapore’s inflation tends to move more sharply than larger, more self-sufficient economies — global commodity price shocks, exchange rate movements, and COE/certificate-driven car prices all show up quickly in the local CPI. That’s why the historical data here shows genuine swings from mild deflation (2015–2016) to over 6% (2008, 2022) rather than a smooth, predictable trend — useful context for why the future-projection mode below defaults to a more conservative 2% rather than assuming the recent high-inflation years continue indefinitely.
A Few Practical Notes
The index used here is constructed from published annual inflation percentages rather than the official rebased CPI index itself, so treat exact figures as a close approximation rather than an official SingStat number — for precise historical CPI values, refer to the Department of Statistics Singapore directly. Singapore’s national CPI also measures an average basket — costs like private property, cars, and childcare have often outpaced the headline figure. Treat both modes as planning estimates, not official government figures.
